Treating-Scoliosis-In-Children

Parents often tend to worry when their child is diagnosed with Scoliosis. Fortunately, modern technologies and skilled doctors can treat this disorder with therapies or Scoliosis surgery.

Scoliosis is  S-shaped sideways curvature of the spinal cord, mostly found in the growth years of a child. It occurs when the orientation of the spine changes. Almost 3% of children have this condition. The good news is, most cases have mild deviations that can be treated easily with Dr. Akhil Tawari’s scoliosis surgery method that involves minimally invasive tools.

How To Understand If Scoliosis Is Mild Or Advanced?

Early diagnoses of Scoliosis help treat the disorder completely. The percentage of angular bend in the spinal canal determines the severity of Scoliosis disorder. If it ranges below  25- 30%, it is mild and manageable with fewer chances of progression, while if it is more than 50%, it progresses rapidly, leading to various lifestyle and health problems.

In the advanced cases of Scoliosis, the crippling of the spine causes the chest bones to project outwards, resulting in building pressure on organs in the thoracic cavity, especially lungs, and interfering with their proper functioning.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of Scoliosis include:

  • Uneven shoulders
  • Uneven waist
  • One shoulder blade appears protruded
  • One hip higher than the other

Diagnosis

The doctor will ask for a brief history of the child’s growth years or probe and prevalence of the disease in the child’s heredity. Also, the doctor physically examines the child’s back and chest and asks to stand, bend or sit to conclude any Scoliosis symptoms. Our scoliosis surgeon Dr. Akhil Tawari further recommends imaging tests to withdraw logical and transparent conclusions. The X-ray will reveal the severity of the curvature, and if the doctor suspects Scoliosis due to a tumor in the spinal cord, then the doctor will ask for more tests such as MRI to probe into the disorder.

Treatment Options

Different factors determine the type of treatment required. Typically, mild Scoliosis can be treated with observation or braces, whereas advanced cases require surgery to treat the angular arch in the spine. Typically if the Scoliosis is mild, the doctors treat it with the following techniques.

  • Observation:

When the Scoliosis is less than 25%, the doctors observe the spine curve progression at an interval every 4-6months. If the progression of the arch is observed is more than 5%, the doctors recommend braces. In contrast, if there is no progression, the doctor recommends leaving the spine undisturbed, and schedules follow-up checkups for spine orientation every 4-6 months.

  • Braces:

Braces are recommended either if the arch is up to or slightly more than 25% or the progression of the spine bend is more than 5% in 4 months. These days modern elastic braces are comfortable when compared to traditional braces. But, traditional braces are more efficient to prevent the progression of Scoliosis and correct Scoliosis.

  • Spine Surgery

However, if  Scoliosis progresses rapidly, it may trigger other consequent problems in breathing, sitting balancing, or walking. Hence, our doctors suggest surgery to treat the disorder. For Scoliosis treatment in Mumbai, our surgeon may perform spine fusion surgery, intending to fuse or join two or more vertebras in one vertebra, such that they cannot move independently.

Or, the surgeon might also insert an adjusting rod in the spine that grows as the child grows. The rod is made of biocompatible bone adhering material that conforms to the spine’s contour, ultimately impr1oving the spine’s condition.
